Bay Area: Taking out Basics 1:13 and Justice for Trayvon Martin

In the days going into June 5, The National Day of Justice for Trayvon Martin, we took a banner that had an enlargement of the BAsics 1:13, “No more generations of our youth…” quote and a heading that read: To All the Trayvon Martin’s All Over The World, We Got Your Back!! out to a street corner in front of a favorite coffee spot and crossroads of progressive people of all nationalities from the middle class, cultural forces, college students and some youth from all over the city. Sentiments and conversations started to surface as we opened up with agitation around BAsics 1:13 and the need for everyone to step up step out for June 5.  Before we get into all the ways people got involved, here are some statements that were made at that corner:

Bay Area, June 5: Boldly spreading “No more generations of our youth…” on the day of protest for Justice for Trayvon Martin

June 5 was a day of defiance and struggle for those standing up for justice for Trayvon Martin—-beginning at high schools during the day, carrying over to Oscar Grant Plaza at 5 pm and rolling back to the ‘hood’ where people of all ages joined in reading quote 1:13 from BAsics, marching for justice for Trayvon Martin, and finding ways to be part of the day even if they couldn’t stand out on the street corner.

“No more generations of our youth, here and all around the world, whose life is over, whose fate has been sealed, who have been condemned to an early death or a life of misery and brutality, whom the system has destined for oppression and oblivion even before they are born. I say no more of that.”
— Bob Avakian, BAsics 1:13

At the high school

At a high school in the ‘hood’ many students were wearing stickers for the June 5 Day of Justice: We Are All Trayvon Martin! Wear Hoodies Everywhere Day! A young guy  came and stood by the banner for Trayvon which he had already signed earlier that week. A revolutionary urged him to step forward. He agreed to hold the banner but was silent. Then some young women students walked up and took charge. In a short time they had the situation under control, leading chants on the bullhorn: “Revolution is what we need, to liberate humanity.” “Justice for Trayvon Martin.” Three young women read the “No More generations” quote from BAsics on the bullhorn. Two other young women posted up in the street in front of the school, thrusting a flier with a picture of Trayvon and a card with BAsics and the quote “no more generations” into the window of every passing car. Soon there was a small protest of a couple dozen students, an adult who worked at the school, and a handful of revolutionaries. The people in the cars liked it.

Getting Down to BAsics With the People of Sanford, part 1

This is reprinted from Revolution newspaper, http://revcom.us:

Part 1: “I Couldn’t Put It Down”

by Michael Slate

In late May I joined the BAsics Bus Tour as it rolled into Sanford, Florida, the town where Trayvon Martin was killed. The tour brought the work and vision of Bob Avakian and his book BAsics into Sanford and I spent my time in the Black neighborhood of Goldsboro talking with the people about their lives and digging into the deep questions of how to change things. This series is dedicated to the people of Sanford and to the crew of volunteers on the tour, whose enthusiasm for spreading the work and leadership of Bob Avakian and for fighting to build the movement for revolution inspired everyone they encountered.

100 Days - 100 Hoodies in Harlem, the impact of BAsics 1:13

Yesterday’s march “100 Days – 100 Hoodies” was greeted with great enthusiasm by people in Harlem. People expressed over and over that the system is greasing the skids to let George Zimmerman free and once again making the victim out as the criminal.  And they want this to stop!  Click HERE for pictures, and click below to read on.

On June 5th, 100 days after the modern American lynching of Trayvon Martin, Harlem youth and others declare “We Are All Trayvon Martin” and respond to the message of BAsics 1:13. They added their names and messages to a poster bearing this quote:

“No more generations of our youth, here and all around the world, whose life is over, whose fate has been sealed, who have been condemned to an early death or a life of misery and brutality, whom the system has destined for oppression and oblivion even before they are born. I say no more of that.”

June 2nd Celebration at Marcus Garvey Park, Harlem, NYC:
picnic and report back from the BAsics Bus Tour

On Sat. Jun 2 we had a picnic at Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem to celebrate and welcome back the volunteers who had participated in the recent leg of the BAsics Bus Tour that went into the deep South.

A group of young girls ranging in age from 5-12 years old were the first to arrive. A week before the picnic one of the girls had run into revolutionaries and signed the BAsics 1:13 “No more generations of our youth…” quote banner — writing “Fair is fair” as her contribution. She had been thinking about the picnic all week and invited her friends. The girls read the quote palm card aloud in unison. The 5-year-old wanted to add “No Racism” to the banner and since she had not yet learned how to write an older girl wrote it for her.

Continue to Advance: Build off the BAsics Bus Tour Through the South

This editorial has been reposted from Revolution newspaper, revcom.us:

The second leg of the BAsics Bus Tour, which went through parts of the South in May and rolled into Sanford, Florida, had a big impact. It spoke to and captured the imagination of thousands… in the South and throughout the country—and many hundreds of people across the country were part of making something very important happen. In doing so, those people around the country and those who the Bus Tour met in the South have been part of beginning to cohere a national movement around the mass fundraising campaign to project Bob Avakian’s vision and works into every corner of society: BA Everywhere… Imagine the Difference It Could Make!

We Say "NO MORE" printed in Florida Star

We Say “NO MORE” statement was published in the Jacksonville Florida Star on Thursday, May 24th.  Click this link and go to page A3 of the e-edition.

Signed by Don Cheadle, Noam Chomsky, Cornel West, Tavis Smiley, Carl Dix, and others. This is a statement that the killing of Trayvon Martin and the 2.4 million in prison make clear that there is a whole generation of Black and Latino youth marked and treated as a “generation of suspects” to be murdered and jailed. This is not an issue for Black people alone but for all who care about justice; it is not a random tragedy. We say NO MORE!

Share this Statement with everyone you know, say “no more!” and mean it, and spread the message widely!
